Physical Model of 1" slice of CMU block construction

Thermal response to 24 hour cycle of air temperature, solar loading, and radiative interchange with clear sky modeled using FEA . This was done completely on a computer, not in the field. The results can be used by thermographers to determine when to go into the field to be able to find what they need to see. It can also be modified to study "what if" scenarios. It can reflect a variety of field conditions, such as time of year, wind, weather, location and wall orientation.

This is a sample of the type of results available using FEA. Other objects, such as roofs or parking lots, can be modeled as well.

Basis of the model is a south-facing wall in calm, clear, southern U.S., summer conditions.

After Dawn

Area in front of empty cell is warmer than area in front of filled cell.

Hourly Views of Front of Block, as seen by a Thermographer This column presents all the results on a common temperature scale so that they can be compared. Temperature range is 40 to 110F. This column allows each image to be optimized so that the differences within an image can be seen. In the field, a thermographer would use this option. The temperature ranges are about 5 to 25F, with most between 10 and 20F.
